Turkey evacuated top Afghan officials, including foreign minister - report
Turkey evacuated top officials of Afghanistan’s former government, including Second Vice President Muhammad Sarwar Danish and Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar, via a Turkish Airlines (THY) flight from Kabul International Airport, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Thursday.
The officials were among individuals targeted by the Taliban, Hürriyet said.
The Taliban claimed a military victory in the country over the weekend, prompting foreign governments to start evacuating their citizens and some Afghans perceived in danger of Taliban recriminations.
The Turkish government planned and ran the rescue operation via the Turkish embassy in Kabul to evacuate Turkish citizens and Afghan officials with close ties to Turkey, Hürriyet said.
Turkey flew 324 people out of Kabul on the THY jet, it reported.
