Chief of Staff Güler's term extended in military council meeting

Turkey on Thursday held its annual Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which saw Chief of General Staff Yaşar Güler's term extended for another year.

Naval Forces Commander Admiral Adnan Özbal and Air Force Commander Gen. Hasan Küçükakyüz will retire and be replaced by Adrimal Ercüment Tatlıoğlu and Combat Air Force Commander Gen. Atilla Gülan, respectively, according to other decisions by the council approved by Erdoğan, Medyascope TV reported.

A total of 16 generals and admirals will be promoted to the next rank and another 47 colonels are to be promoted to generals or admirals effective Aug. 30,  according to YAŞ decisions announced by Turkish Presidential spokesman İbrahim Kalın.

The latest appointments bring the number of generals and admirals in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to 273 from 264 to, Kalın said.

The extension of Güler’s term makes him the first chief of staff over the age of 67, after Marshal Fevzi Çakmak, the first chief of general staff of the Republic of Turkey.

Güler, who was appointed to the position in July 2018, has also become the only person to serve in the position for more than four years since 1990.
