Melted snow reveals bodies of 25 undocumented migrants in eastern Turkey
The bodies of 25 unregistered migrants were found in Turkey’s eastern Van province’s Başkale district, near the border to Iran, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The discovery took place with the melting of snow in the area, which revealed the bodies of the migrants, all of who were male and 15 from African countries, the newspaper said.
Four of the men were identified and repatriated, while the other 21 were buried in a cemetery in Van.
The bodies of the men are believed to have been under the snow for months and more bodies were found on the Iranian side of the border, Hürriyet said.
Turkey has been a key transit point for illegal migrants, many of who are fleeing persecution, as they look to cross into Europe.
Some 286,000 irregular immigrants, those who arrive without proper documentation, arrived in Turkey in 2018, according to immigration authority figures.
