Newly elected Istanbul mayor İmamoğlu declares assets

The newly elected opposition mayor of İstanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, declared his assets on Tuesday, two days after a decisive victory in Turkey’s largest city.

İmamoğlu, who defeated the ruling Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate Binali Yıldırm in a revote for Istanbul’s mayoral seat on Sunday, has declared 25,757 square metres of real estate acquired between 1994-2019 and a 20 percent share in 1.4 billion lira ($242 million) company founded in 1993, independent news site Diken said.

The newly elected opposition mayor’s move to declare assets arrives on the heels of Sunday’s revote, before which the 49-year-old politician vowed to remain fully transparent in his new seat and promised to declare his assets.

İmamoğlu has 17 real estate properties totalling 4,841,000 lira ($828,000), the site said.

The new Istanbul mayor's assets include a 180-metre commercial space in Istanbul’s Güngören district and a 591 square metre commercial space in the Akçaabat town of northern Turkey’s Trabzon province.
The soft-spoken Istanbul mayor also has 20 percent shares in a construction company he co-founded, İmamoğlu İnş. San. ve Tic. Ltd., Diken said.

İmamoğlu was elected mayor of Istanbul in the March 31 nation-wide local elections after narrowly defeating ruling AKP’s candidate Yıldırım. However, the main opposition Repbulican People’s Party (CHP) candidate’s time in office was short-lived, as the country’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) annulled the vote and ordered a redo following an appeal by the AKP citing irregularities and fraud at the ballot boxes.

İmamoğu has vowed to do away with what he calls the extravagance and non-transparency experienced during the 25 years of Islamist rule in Turkey’s financial hub before his election.
