Turkey says soldier killed in northern Iraq, bringing death toll to 5
A Turkish soldier was killed on Sunday during a cross-border ground operation into Iraq targeting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Turkey’s Defence Ministry said.
Specialist Corporal Recep Yüksel was killed in a firefight with PKK members Operation Claw-Tiger’s mission area, the Haftanin region of northern Iraq, bringing the total death toll of the Turkish Armed Forces in the region to five.
Turkey launched Operation Claw-Tiger on June 17, targeting the PKK in various regions of northern Iraq in response to an increase in attacks against Turkish military forces.
Turkey regularly targets PKK in operations on home soil and in northern Iraq, where the armed group’s headquarters is located.
