Man dies after drinking disinfectant to protect against COVID-19 in northwest Turkey

A man died after consuming ethanol and disinfectant in an attempt to protect himself against COVID-19 in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ, Gerçek Gündem newspaper reported on Sunday.

Barış Çimen, who reportedly had psychological problems, was hospitalised in the town of Çerkezköy on Saturday after the incident, it said.

The growing belief online that injecting or ingesting certain hygiene products could help prevent contracting the coronavirus has prompted companies, such as Lysol, to issue a statement this week urging people not to consume their merchandise.
